Note from the director…

Welcome to the Holly Springs School Of Dance’s 13th season! For our returning students, welcome home! For our new students, we are so happy that you are here with us! On behalf of the teachers and staff, we want you to know that we are committed to making this year a very special part of your child’s life. Since this newsletter is so important for keeping you updated on all of the activities in the studio, please make sure you have registered at our website, www.hollyspringsdance.com in order to receive it via email. We have so many fun things going on each month, we don’t want you to miss out on anything! Additional copies will also be available in each studio.

Thanks to everyone for an amazing summer season! I can’t believe how fast everything went by last summer. Some of the highlights were camp sharings, watching dancers at the Carolina Ballet Intensive Sharing, and dancing in New York at the Teacher Summit.

Welcome to some new friends as well as old friends with new positions in our HSSOD family! Shelley Jacobsson is joining our staff to work with Amy Fisher and Susan Markoch as our office managers. Ms. Denise is taking on the role of Ballet Mistress within our school. We are very excited about having their expertise and leadership enhancing our school this year! Looking forward to the best season ever! Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns at chappell@hollyspringsdance.com

Love, Marilyn

PS: “Quotations” is our recital theme this season! We’re going to be creating pieces based on our favorite quotes. See the inspiration wall in the break room for dancer’s favorite quotes… or add your own!

PULSE www.thepulsetour.com March 26th – 27th

Any dancers ages ten and up who would like to attend The Pulse in Atlanta, Georgia March 26/27, should download a group registration form (registration@thepulseontour.com) and hand it in at the front desk by September 10th. The Pulse is a dance convention where students can take class with the choreographers from “So You Think You Can Dance”. The cost is 210.00 which does not include lodging or transportation.

For the past two years, we have all caravanned to Atlanta the Friday before the convention. Parents are responsible for making their own lodging arrangements. Once we know who is attending, we will help you contact others who may need roommates. This is a really fun event, so we hope you will want to join us!

Help a Dancer!!

Do you have a way that you could support someone in our dance family? We can share acts of kindness in a variety of ways. During what has been a very difficult time for many families, here are some ways you might be able to help….

  • Offer to donate gently used shoes or leotards to share with others.
  • Pay it forward; offer to pay for a costume or one month’s tuition for a struggling family.
  • Organize a carpool to lesson the burden of transportation.
  • Volunteer your services (props construction, sewing, graphic design work, working at events) to help dancers organizing events.
  • Pledge to say something positive to every dancer you come in contact with for a whole week. Who knows, it just might become a habit and kindness is contagious!
  • Be creative! We’re open to any suggestions!

We work hard to reach out to our community, but we also want to take care of each other! Thanks for your help!

A Great Cause...

Below is a link to a website that has beautiful headbands for our girls, friend / family girls, birthday's or just because gifts. They are only $8 each with free shipping and all the money goes to an awesome cause. Merck transferred Tim Potvin to Charlotte so his daughter Ellie (8 yo twin) could get care at CMC Charlotte for her rare childhood cancer. Tim is part of a very close knit Merck family and we are all looking for ways to support him and his family through these trying times. But... they need more support.

Please consider buying these headbands as they are for an excellent cause & oh so cute!!! Also, please pass this message along to anyone you know who might be interested. Ellie is battling stage 4 relapse cancer. They are an amazing family.

“The Children Who Had Roses For Noses.”

“The Children Who Had Roses For Noses.” by Richard Dobbs and Marilyn Chappell

PS... I have to share some exciting news…

My dear friend Richard Dobbs (gifted artist) and I have been working on a Children’s book entitled “The Children Who Had Roses For Noses.” I wrote the book when I was pregnant with Skylar. My husband Chris and I had been told that she might have Downs Syndrom, but we made the choice not to do further testing and risk losing Skylar. When she was born perfectly healthy, we were thrilled but had a whole new sense of compassion for parents having children with special needs. I told Richard about the book and that I wondered if he would be interested in illustrating it. He shared with me that he has a sister with Downs Syndrom and would love to be a part of this.

The story is really about celebrating our uniqueness and unconditional love. You can check out our book at Lulu.com. We hope you like it!

SDC Jr. at Jack's Day 2008
Springs Dance Company hosts free "Catch Up" day...
SDC presents "Dance as if Nobody is Watching"

Holly Springs Christmas Parade!!

Christmas Parade Is Just Around The Corner! We want all of our dancers to participate with us on Saturday, December 13th with the Holly Springs Christmas Parade. We love opening this up to all of our students and always have a terrific time! This year, we will be dancing to “Rudolf The Red Nosed Reindeer”. Here’s what you need to know…

  • Dancers will line up at 10am for an 11am start time
  • Everyone should wear a red HSSOD sweatshirt, a white turtleneck, black leggings or jazz pants, and hair in a ponytail with a white ribbon and tennis shoes.
  • All dancers ages five and up will learn a short dance that will be performed during the parade route.
  • Dancers in our pre-school aged classes will be pulled in a wagon by their parents. Wagons should be decorated in a “presents” theme since they will make up the back part of our human sled. Use your creativity since one of you will be chosen for one month’s free tuition. If you do not own a wagon, ask around if someone else in your class can help. We’re sure you can catch a ride with a friend! Class Moms or Dads, we need you!
  • We will need two parent volunteers from each class to walk with the kids during the parade and help with drop off/pick up. Please contact your child’s teacher.
  • More info to come with the November newsletter!
  • HSSOD red sweatshirts can be ordered now until November 15th for 15.90 w/tax.

Is your child working really hard in class but could use some one on one time? SDC will be volunteering their time and expertise on Saturday, February 21st from 1-3pm for all HSSOD students. You may stop by at any time between 1-3pm for a private lesson to help your dancer boost their confidence and skill level as we head towards recital choreography. The only thing we ask is that parents stay at the studio, and that dancers come with specific skills that they want additional instruction in. You should plan on being here about twenty minutes. We hope that you will take advantage of this great and free opportunity!

Amanda Thatcher, SDC dancer and beautiful assistant, is offering 30 minute private lessons for 25.00 each session. If you are interested in setting up a private lesson, please let us know.

Springs Dance Company will be producing it’s concert, Dance As If No One Is Watching on Saturday, March 14th at 2pm and 7pm at the Holly Springs Cultural Arts Center.

This student produced concert highlights young choreographers as they create new pieces, make costuming decisions, learn about marketing, and handle all of the aspects of putting together their own concert. The audience will vote on two pieces that they would like to see performed in the recital.

You may purchase tickets for 5.00 at etix.com or stop by the Holly Springs Cultural Arts Center. This makes a great Mother/Daughter date or a fun outing for an entire class to go and support an assistant! Please mark your calendar and make plans to attend!!
